1. First NATIONAL PARK in Croatia

This year park celebrates 70th birthday. April 8th 1949, is the exact date Plitvice lakes became first ever National Park in Croatia. That makes our Park the oldest, most visited and the biggest national park in our country. With age comes wisdom, they say, but if you come and see the magnificence and beauty of our loveliest gem, you will see that in this case, with age comes beauty. That takes us to reason number two.

2. UNESCO World heritage site

Plitvice lakes National park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 for its “outstanding natural beauty.” The lakes of Plitvice are a result of century-old processes and the sedimentation of chalk, which is abundantly available in the waters of this karst area. These sedimentations are called tufa or travertine (both are called sedra or tuf in the Croatian language, apart from many other names like bigar or vapneni mačak). Tufa consists of sedimentations of minerals from the water that typically consolidate on moss or on the underground of the lakes. These sediments are the results of century-old sedimentation processes. Year after year, new layers of sediments are being added. This is one of the main reasons why our lakes are special. This too, leads us to the reason number 3.

3. Unique 16 lakes and magical color

There are tons of answers for the most common question our visitors ask us: “Why are Plitvice so special?” 16 cascading lakes come together to form a place so unique and gorgeous that it almost looks like heaven on Earth. These lakes are known for their cascades and the ongoing biodynamic process of tufa, or Travertine formation, which only occurs under specific ecological and hydrological conditions. The other thing why lakes are being famous are their distinctive colors, ranging from azure to green, grey or blue. The colors change constantly depending on the quantity of minerals or organisms in the water and the angle of sunlight. Those colors make surrounding nature even more attractive.
